I think this should also apply to the Seawall. The Seawall is another mess - people walking in bike paths, rollerblading on pedestrian paths, etc - but the irony is that the Seawall has big orange and green circles and traffic pattern directions painted right on it. Not in English, French, or Swahili...but in universal symbols that are easy to understand. And still they ignore it.

you're so right, robson is THE WORST for this! i dread going to robson for this very reason. and bikes on sidewalks? jeez! fine, if the traffic is INSANE, i can forgive breaking the by-law (stick to the road), but if you insist on biking on the sidewalk, make room for the pedestrians first!! don't just plow your way through and force the pedestrians to walk in the mud, or even worse, on the busy street, the very one you were trying to avoid! it's called the sideWALK, not the sidebike!! (nor the sidestand, re: loiterers that take up the whole width of the sidewalk)

So many of your comments are right on target, especially the philosophy of staying to the right. I exercise this rule when I walk; the same rules of the road. I love the idea of sticking the elbows out when crossing the crosswalk. When someone approaches me, I just put my right arm over my front pointing "Move That Way" -- (to their right -- or just stop in my tracks and let them run into me. It's better than being accused of assault. You are not permitted to walk on my side of the sidewalk! Move to your right and learn how to share the sidewalk. I still cannot understand why people line up at crosswalks waiting to cross instead of stacking up 2 across. I do not understand why people don't "get" walking 3-4 abreast is inappropriate. At least one in their party must move forward or drop back to give me the part of the sidewalk I am entitled to.

Finch this is a common issue. Very few people know how to walk properly in this city. And yes, I have come to the point where I just body check people for always expecting me to move when they are 8 abreast on a side walk. My other favourite is groups of people stopping and chatting in front of an exit door like at Safeway on Davie. This is a a pervasive thing that maybe we stem the tide on.

So Finch: Attacking people for ranting on a rant site is pretty swift. What next? Jumping on people for banking with a bank or watching TV on a TV or voting when they want a say?

Holy crap! You are clearly incompetent. If someone's in your way, either say"excuse me" or beat the ever-lovin' piss outta them if they won't move! Come to think of it, you should beat the crap out of yourself for being such a whining pussy that you have to blog about the sidewalk etiquette in Vancouver. i wonder if there are any more pressing issues in the world you could write about like, "i hate pastel colours", or "why do my neighbours have to have white blinds"," I asked for a venti, no fat, soy, easy whip, room for cream, americano"....cry me a f***ing river!
